A Sleep Cycle Series: Understanding and Improving Sleep for Infants, Teens, and Young Adults

Sleep Cycle, the leading sleep technology company, is launching a new video series to help teens and young adults overcome common sleep challenges. In these videos, sleep expert Dr. Mike Gradisar, Head of Sleep Science at Sleep Cycle, shares insights from two decades of research and clinical practice, offering practical strategies to reset body clocks, overcome social jetlag, and build lifelong sleep habits.

“Many young people struggle with sleep, but it’s not because of screen time or late-night activities—it’s biology,” says Erik Jivmark “With the right tools, children, teens, and young adults can improve their sleep and that is the additional value that we are looking to add to new and existing users. These videos break down the science and provide simple, effective techniques to make that happen.”

Why Teen Sleep is Different
Teenagers struggle with sleep not because of screen time or late night activities but due to natural biological shifts in their circadian rhythm. As puberty begins, the body’s internal clock shifts later, making it harder for teens to fall asleep and wake up early for school. This misalignment leads to chronic sleep deprivation, affecting focus, mood, and overall health.

“It is a common misconception about teen sleep that the individual is to blame and not their biology. Allowing teens to change their sleep habits gradually with Bright Light Therapy is a smooth and surprisingly easy way to support teenagers with this.”

Young Adults and the Lingering Effects of Social Jetlag
Even as teenagers transition into their 20s, their body clocks remain delayed, making it difficult to maintain regular sleep patterns, where late nights and early mornings create a constant cycle of exhaustion. This phenomenon, known as social jetlag, affects productivity, focus, and energy levels.

“Adapting to a new reality of consistent early mornings and adult duties is challenging in itself but adding lack of sleep to that mix can make it overwhelming. I always recommend morning light exposure, consistent bedtimes, and evening melatonin supplementation to support sleep and circadian health.”

Parents and the endless bedtime battle

Many parents struggle with their baby’s sleep, often expecting them to sleep through the night from an early age. However, infant sleep biology takes time to mature, and sleep patterns develop differently for each baby. One key factor is sleep pressure, the natural buildup of sleepiness that helps infants fall asleep, which fully develops around six months of age.

“For over 20 years, I’ve helped people overcome sleep issues, and I’m thrilled to share a gentle, science-based technique that can make a real difference for parents and babies worldwide,” said Dr. Gradisar. “Bedtime fading is a simple yet powerful way to improve infant sleep without distress, and I encourage parents to try it and see the results for themselves.”
